When it comes to cardmaking, it can be incredibly tempting to keep adding elements—more layers, more sequins, more shimmer. But sometimes, the most impactful cards are the ones that embrace white space and let a few key elements take center stage.

Today, I’m sharing a clean and simple (CAS) card that balances vibrant color with a crisp, minimalist layout.

The Inspiration Behind the Design

For this project, I wanted the sentiment, “hope today is Beautiful,” to be the heart of the card. To complement the elegant, flowing script, I chose large, bold floral blooms in striking shades of red. By framing the card corners with these large illustrations, the eye is naturally drawn right to the center text.

Key Features of a “Clean and Simple” Layout:

Embrace Ample White Space: Notice how more than half of the card face is completely open white cardstock. White space isn’t “empty” space; it gives your eyes a place to rest and makes your focal points pop.
Strategic Focal Points: Instead of covering the whole canvas, the large red flowers are clustered along the left and bottom edges, anchoring the design without overwhelming it.
Minimalist Embellishments: To add just a touch of texture without cluttering the clean aesthetic, I added a few scattered, glossy red enamel dots that match the flower petals perfectly.

I used Altenew’s Crystal Clear Enamel dots and colored them with alcohol inks to match my flowers. 😁

How to Recreate This Look

Stamping & Coloring: Stamp your favorite large floral outline stamps on high-quality white cardstock. Color them with a vibrant, high-contrast palette (like these stunning red petals and muted gray leaves) using fresh dye inks.
- Tip: I used the darkest and brightest reds for each stenciled layer. For the last layer, I used the same shade as I did for the second-last layer, and added Jet Black Ink to darken it more. This is a great technique to add deeper and bolder shades.
Die-Cutting & Arrangement: Die-cut or fussy-cut the images closely. Arrange them so they spill off the edges of your card base, trimming away any overhang to create a clean, seamless border.
The Perfect Sentiment: Stamp your sentiment in a crisp, rich black ink right in the open white space. A combination of a clean sans-serif font paired with an elegant script works beautifully for this layout.
Finishing Touches: Ensure to use Instant Dimension Foam Tape for subtle dimension, and finish with a few perfectly placed enamel dots.
