Elegant Shimmer & Shade: Vintage Floral Card

There’s something so magical about pairing rich, tranquil blue tones with glittering gold accents. For today’s project as an Altenew Certified Educator, I wanted to create a handmade card that balances vintage wallpaper elegance with eye-catching modern texture.

The Inspiration

I set out to create a lush, delicate floral pattern using stencil layering and dimensional paste. By combining smooth gradient-blended foliage with raised, sparkling gold roses, the design pops off the page while keeping a soft, sophisticated look.

Step-by-Step Tutorial

1. Blend the Foliage

I started by securing an A2 white card panel ($4.25″ \times 5.5″$) to my grid mat.
Next, I placed the leaf and stem layer of the Chateau Blooms Stencil Set over the panel.
Using my blending brushes and shades from the Tranquility Fresh Dye Ink set, I blended color across the leafy tendrils—applying a slightly heavier hand toward the center and bases of the stems to create a soft, natural ombre look.

2. Add the Shimmer Relief Roses

Once my ink layer was dry, I lined up the rose detail stencil layer right over the panel.
I used a palette knife to spread a smooth layer of Shimmer Relief Paste in Brushed Pyrite across all the rose openings.
Carefully lifting the stencil straight up revealed those gorgeous raised, sparkling gold blooms! I then set the panel aside to dry completely.

3. Heat Emboss the Sentiment

For maximum contrast, I stamped “Hope Your Wishes Come True” (from One-Go: Birthday Greetings) onto jet black cardstock using clear embossing ink.
I coated it with bright white embossing powder and heat-set it until smooth and glossy.
Finally, I die-cut the sentiment using the co-coordinating die.

4. Assemble the Card

Once the relief paste on my floral background panel was fully dry, I adhered it directly to an A2 card base.
I popped the heat-embossed sentiment right across the middle using foam adhesive strips for a bit of dimension and focal point structure.

My Top Crafting Tip

Pro Tip: When pairing relief paste with dye inks, always make sure your ink layer is 100% dry before spreading wet paste on top. This prevents the dye ink from wicking into your glitter paste, keeping your gold finish crisp and bright!
